After being well appreciated for her performance in Dum Laga Ke Haisha, Bhumi Pednekar is overwhelmed with joy and is looking forward to making an impact with her acting. The newbie actress, who has proved that plus size heroines can be well appreciated in Bollywood, explains how she landed this plum role in a freakishly lucky way.
Bhumi was a casting assistant to Shanoo Sharma for six years at Yash Raj Films. The debutant actress was actually auditioning other actresses for Sandhya’s role. As Bhumi mentioned, “I never knew I would play Sandhya. On some days I used to audition 100 people and would learn a lot from the different approaches they took towards playing the character. We had a script reading and started looking for plus size girls who would fit Sandhya’s part. I was always a little plump, so one day Shanoo suggested that we record a mock audition with me.”
That is when Bhumi recorded her first audition take. After a few days, Shanoo came up to her and said that she had cleared the first round. An excited Bhumi started preparing for the next rounds while also auditioning other girls, which was a part of her job. “I auditioned quite a few girls for Sandhya’s part during that time also. It was really interesting because I had to be true to my job of casting, while at the same time I wanted to play Sandhya as well.”
Bhumi was selected and she played the part with conviction and grace. Bhumi said about her experience, “Seema Pahwa, who plays my mother in the film helped me a lot for the film. She helped me work on my dialect and we would have long discussions before the shoot, which really helped me enhance my performance. Apart from that we went to Haridwar where we lived for a while. We shopped, visited local parlors and many more places to experience life over there. I wanted to know how a girl lives in Haridwar, how she dresses and how she behaves. It helped me get a feel of my character and this enabled me to do justice to my part.”
Bhumi even had to put on weight for the film. She said, “The credit for my look goes to Darshan Jalan who was my costume designer. I felt like Sandhya when I wore those clothes. As for my weight, yes I had to gain weight for the film, but I honestly enjoyed it a lot because being a foodie I could munch on anything and everything without thinking twice.”
Dum Laga Ke Haisha is directed by Sharat Katariya and stars Ayushmann Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar in lead roles featuring Kumar Sanu in a cameo.
