Deepika Padukone talks about depression & how she dealt with it

Earlier this year, Deepika Padukone revealed that she was battling depression. The dimpled beauty said that she was trying to distract herself by focusing on work.

Deepika will now talk about the issue on a show titled ‘Let’s Talk Depression: Deepika’s Story’ on NDTV. The show, hosted by Barkha Dutt, will also see her mom Ujjala Padukone and a counsellor too.

When asked why she chose to speak about it, she said, “The reason why I chose to speak up is because if in doing so, if I can impact one life, because I lost a friend couple of months ago, and so for me I think if I can impact even one life in this entire process of speaking up and letting people know that ‘You know what, it’s something that I’ve been through and something I could deal with because I had a fantastic support system’ and which is why I think it’s important that my mother is here with me today because she is the one who sort of encouraged me. I realised something was wrong, I realised that I was being different, I couldn’t pin point what the issue was.”

The ‘Happy New Year’ actress also shared that it started in February 2014 when she woke up like feeling directionless and empty.

“It all started in February 15 last year, when I suddenly woke up one morning and where I had won all my awards and all the appreciation for 2013 had happened, it was a great time and obviously everyone is going to think ‘why is she depressed she has everything going for her?’ But I woke up one morning just feeling empty. I had this feeling in my stomach; I woke up like feeling directionless.

“I didn’t know where to go, I didn’t know what to do, I had this bouts of feeling so low that I would start crying at the drop of the hat. And luckily at that time they (her parents) had come. They were getting ready to go to the airport and I usually sit with them in their room before they leave and I started crying, so she said, ‘Oh, are you ok?’ because it’s always tough to leave family. It’s tough, so she thought it was one of those. And I kept crying and she could sense that something was wrong. She asked me if it was something to do with my personal life, is it your work, has someone said something to you, and it was none of these reasons. She sensed that something was wrong so she changed her ticket.

“That went on for almost a month, she would never my sight, and she was with me all the time. I couldn’t understand what was wrong with me. There were times I’d feel okay, and there were times I’d feel really low… Sometimes, being out around people helped, sometimes it didn’t help. I don’t think it was in my control or the people who were surrounding me…There were days when I would wake up and feel like, it was too exhausting, I didn’t want to wake up. There were days when I just wanted to be in bed just sleep, not wake up,” she added.

When Deepika revealed her battle with depression, she had said, “I thought it was stress, so I tried to distract myself by focusing on work, and surrounding myself with people, which helped for a while. But the nagging feeling didn’t go away. My breath was shallow, I suffered from lack of concentration and I broke down often.”

‘Let’s Talk Depression: Deepika’s Story’ will air this Saturday (March 21) at 7 p.m. on NDTV.
