Vidya Balan: I’m not in the industry to champion the cause of women empowerment

Vidya Balan: I’m not in the industry to champion the cause of women empowerment
Vidya Balan never fails to surprise us with her unconventional choice of films. From The Dirty Picture toKahaani 2, Vidya has always tried to break the glass ceiling, challenging the stereotypes at its roots.
However, it did came as a surprise when Vidya, who has done a number of women-centric movies, in an interview to a news portal, said that she is not here [entertainment industry] to champion the cause of women empowerment. What?
“I’m part of stories that I feel compelled to tell. So some of them work, some of them don’t, but I’m not here to champion the cause of women’s empowerment,” said Balan.
Explaining her statement she further said that she is here to champion only one cause and that is herself. “Yes. If I’m here to champion anyone’s cause, that’s I, me, myself. (Laughs) If it ends up inspiring someone, therefore, to take up cudgels for themselves, great! Change has to happen at a very personal level for each one of us,” Vidya added.

Asserting that her film choices are an extension of her beliefs, the Kahaani actor said that she is here to tell stories and hence she ends up picking stories which empower her. “My primary purpose is to entertain, but just that the story through which I entertain invariably is an extension of my beliefs. So, can I entertain in a film where I have four songs and two scenes? I can’t. I’m incapable of it,” said the 38-year-old actor.
Commenting on why she ends up taking women-centric roles, the actor said, “I’m at the center of my universe and I happen to be a woman. So I’m the most important person in my life. I’m telling stories where that importance, that value is shown to a woman, because I would choose only that. It comes naturally to me. But am I doing it for the larger good of womankind? No. I’m not jhanda gaadke jo kehtehai na championing the cause of women’s empowerment or anything like that through my films.”
Going further she said, “But outside, as Vidya, I’m very opinionated. I don’t know if I’m able to communicate exactly. Like, everyone says that every film should give a message. I don’t think you should give a message with every film. I don’t believe in preaching, I believe in practice, that’s what I do. That’s what it is. When I say that I’m not here to champion the cause of women’s empowerment – I’m here to practise it.” Well, we got your point, Vidya!
Vidya Balan will next be seen in her upcoming movie Begum Jaan where she plays the role of a madam of the brothel and she looks deadly in the first poster of the movie. The movie is set to hit theaters on April 1, 2017.
