The biggest blockbuster of 2019 is Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani starrer Kabir Singh. The film was a Hindi remake of Telugu film Arjun Reddy starring Vijay Deverakonda. Based on the love story of a doctor who has anger management issues, Kabir Singh and Arjun Reddy did face a lot of criticism for being misogynistic. However, fans loved it even more and trolled anyone who made fun of Shahid’s film including Taapsee Pannu. Taapsee recently got involved in a war of words over her sly dig on Kabir Singh with a user.
In a recent interview, Taapsee spoke about the same and mentioned that Kabir Singh and Arjun Reddy are not the only films that are misogynistic. The Manmarziyaan actress asserted that there are various other films in the same league and that she has a problem with glorifying such flawed characters. Taapsee mentioned that people who had a problem with her character Rumi in Manmarziyaan loved Kabir Singh and she pointed out that this was the double standard of the society.
Taapsee said, “Kabir Singh and Arjun Reddy are not the only films glorifying misogyny, there are several others too but not to this extent. That is one of the reasons why I do the kind of films I do, there should be a counter narrative too. I know I’ll never be able to match up to the numbers of this film but that won’t deter me. We are on the cusp of a change and I am not going to give up now. The problem is not showing flawed characters… The problem is when you glorify them and make what they are doing seem heroic. This character is so revered that whatever he does is not just accepted, it is celebrated. The same misogynist people who didn’t see a problem with Kabir, booed Rumi. We aren’t oblivious to the double standards of our society.”
Meanwhile, Taapsee did handle the backlash for taking a dig at Kabir Singh and also responded to it in an epic manner. On the work front, Taapsee is getting ready for her two big films, Mission Mangal being the recent one and Saand Ki Aankh comes later. Mission Mangal will see her play a scientist involved in launching ISRO’s mission to Mars. The film stars Vidya Balan, Akshay Kumar, Kirti Kulhari, Nithya Menen, Sonakshi Sinha and Sharman Joshi. It is being produced by R Balki and Akshay Kumar. Directed by Jagan Shakti, Mission Mangal is slated to release on August 15, 2019,
