Sonu Nigam’s Twitter rant against Azaan and forced religiousness in India lands him in trouble
Singer Sonu Nigam and controversy go hand-in-hand. The singer, who was woken up by the morning Azaan today, got on to Twitter and posted a rant against it.
In a series of tweets, Sonu expressed his frustration. He posted, “God bless everyone. I’m not a Muslim and I have to be woken up by the Azaan in the morning. When will this forced religiousness end in India.”
Sonu added, “And by the way Mohammed did not have electricity when he made Islam.. Why do I have to have this cacophony after Edison? I don’t believe in any temple or gurudwara using electricity To wake up people who don’t follow the religion . Why then..? Honest? True?”
As soon as he posted the tweets, he started trending with many of them condemning the singer for his post. Sonu concluded his rant with a tweet that read, “Gundagardi hai bus…”
While many criticized Sonu, there were many who supported the singer and lauded him for his tweets. Many even felt that it was brave of Sonu to express his opinions in a country where Freedom of Expression is just a term.
Amidst many who reacted to Sonu’s tweets was editor and screen writer Apurva Israni, who’s reply grabbed lot of attention. Apurva tweeted, “Don’t want to hear the Azaan at dawn, nor do I want to hear a Chikni Chameli tuned Ganesh Aarti at dusk. Ban ALL loudspeakering of religion.”
Well, we wonder what irked Sonu that he resorted to the Twitter rant!
