Ranveer Singh on playing Kapil Dev in 83: It’s a real honour and privilege to practice at Lord’s in London

Post the success of Rohit Shetty’s Simmba and Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, Ranveer Singh jumped onto the sets of Kabir Khan’s 83. From kick-starting the training for the film in Dharamshala to spending time with legendary cricketer Kapil Dev in New Delhi, Ranveer Singh is going the extra mile to get into the skin of the character. A few days back, Ranveer Singh and his 83 squad had jetted off to London to start shooting for the film, and the actor had taken to social media to share a picture of Kapil’s Devils.

During an interview with India Today, Ranveer Singh opened up on playing the role of Kapil Dev in Kabir Khan’s 83 and the actor said that he is quite excited to be chatting and meeting cricketing legends. “Hum Lords mein baithe hain, cricket ke sab legends hamare saath hai, World Cup chal raha hai, main picture kar raha hoon 83 win pe, role hai Kapil paaji ka. Sunny sir (Sunil Gavaskar) ke saath din ki shuruwat hui, Shane Warne mile. For us boys, can we take a moment to appreciate how blessed we are to be able to experience this,” Ranveer informed. Yesterday, just like an excited boy, Ranveer Singh took to social media to share a series of selfies with cricket legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Shane Warne and Sunil Gavaskar, and we are sure that the actor is leaving no stone unturned to learn the ropes of the game from the legends. But Ranveer Singh feels that working in a film like ‘83 and to be able to essay the role of Kapil Dev is a dream come true as he said, “Hamare yaha cricket is a religion. This is like bhakti vaali yatra pe agaye saare. Extremely proud to be associated with this film.”

But amidst all this, what excites Ranveer Singh is the fact that he is getting to do what others only dream of and that is, getting to practice at Lords. “We are shooting in the UK. Aapko pata nahi kitna achcha lagta hai ki hum subah uthke Lord’s mein aake practice karte hai, socho hamare liye kya hoga,” said Ranveer, adding, “It’s a real honour and privilege for us to be here. We are proud of the film we are working on. Also, it coincides with the World Cup.” Talking about ’83, the film is a sports drama based on India’s historic win against West Indies at the 1983 Cricket World Cup. Besides Ranveer Singh, the film also features Saqib Saleem, R Badree, Harrdy Sandhu, Chirag Patil, Pankaj Tripathi, Ammy Virk and Saahil Khattar as members of the World Cup squad. The film will hit the screens on April 10, 2020.
