Kanika Kapoor made her debut in singing in the year 2012 with her very first song Jugni Ji which became a commercial success. The singer made her Bollywood debut in 2014 with the song Baby Doll for the film Ragini MMS 2. Baby Doll topped the charts and Kanika received wide critical acclaim and several accolades for her singing style, including the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. She has sung many hit songs like Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan from Roy, Lovely from Happy New Year, Da Da Dasse from Udta Punjab and much more.
In an interview with Talking Music on JioSaavan, Kanika Kapoor spoke about her journey, the struggle she had to face and how she was not allowed to sing after marriage. She said that she was married at that time and wasn’t allowed to sing, her husband’s family were on the thought that ‘gaana bajana wala nahi banna hai. After some more persuasion with her then-husband, she struck a deal with him that she won’t take up singing as a profession but just practice it for her own self. Later, her ex-husband agreed to let her pursue music and they even visited some music producers for the same. But not much had happened. It was through YouTube that she started showing her talent to the audience.
Kanika said that Ekta Kapoor had loved her voice after she heard Jugni and it was then that the singer received the offer to sing Baby Doll but it did take some time. After 6 months, things fell in place and she became the voice for Baby Doll. Kanika Kapoor had married Raj Chandok, an NRI businessman, in 1997 and moved to London with her husband. She got divorced in 2012.
