Girish Karnad, actor, director and playwright passes away at 81

Girsh Karnad who is best known for his roles in movies such as Tiger Zinda Hai, Shivaay and 8 x 10 Tasveer among others passed away at his residence in Bengaluru today. He was 81. Apart from acting, he was also a playwright and director. His plays have been translated into many languages. In the year 1998, he was conferred Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India for is contributions to literature and theatre.

He was bestowed with Padma Shri in the year 1974 and Padma Bhushan in the year 1992 by the Government of India for his contribution in arts. He also the recipient of 4 Filmfare awards

Speaking about his personal life, he was born in Maharashtra on May 19, 1938. In the year 1958, he got his Bachelor’s degree from Karnataka University. He later studied philosophy, politics and economics at the University of Oxford where he secured his M.A. degree in the year 1963. He is survived by his wife Saraswathi, son Raghu Karnad and daughter Radha.
