If you’re still reeling from a large Game of Thrones hangover, you won’t have to worry for long as five GOT prequels are being planned, with George R.R. Martin’s heavy involvement. Currently, one of the five prequels has already begun filming in Belfast, Northern Ireland and dates back to 5000 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The place setting for the prequel is Westeros and will be majorly focused on The Long Night, which was an epic confrontation with the White Walkers.
George recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly to share some juicy details of the highly-awaited GOT prequel. Firstly, unlike Game of Thrones, where it was the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, in the prequel, Westeros is divided into 100 kingdoms, roughly. Furthermore, absolutely pleasing news to hear is that the Stark family will be a part of the prequel as they were descended from the First Men. While the prequel predates dragons, expect direwolves and mammoths, instead. Martin revealed to EW, “The Starks will definitely be there. Obviously, the White Walkers are here — or as they’re called in my books, The Others — and that will be an aspect of it. There are things like direwolves and mammoths.”
While House Lannister will not be there in the prequel, there will instead be House Casterlys. But, we may get to see a glimpse of House Lannister later on as it was them (founded by Lann the Clever) who swindled the Casterlys from Casterly Rock. The GOT prequel is being headlined by Naomi Watts, Naomi Ackie, and Denise Gough but the author reiterates that the show, like Game of Thrones, is more of an ensemble story. It’s a larger ensemble cast with no leads.
Finally, George also confessed that the GOT prequel is officially untitled. However, Martin is keen on The Long Night or even The Longest Night. For the author, both titles would be pretty good contenders.
