Vidya Balan’s Begum Jaan has finally hit the screens today i.e April 14, 2017 . Set in the time of partition, the film traces the lives of Vidya and the women living in her brothel in rural Punjab. Begum Jaan is a Hindi adaptation of director Srijit Mukherji’s Bengali film Rajkahini.
The trailer created quite a stir, but the film has got a low occupancy rate in the theatres today. Despite being a holiday for Good Friday and Ambedkar Jayanti, the film couldn’t manage to pull the audience. According to a report in a trade website, Begum Jaan got only 15 to 20% occupancy rate in the morning shows. But, in Punjab, the occupancy was good to the level of 80 to 85%.
In an interview with us, when we asked does box office numbers affect Vidya, she said, “Of course! But thankfully I am so selfish about being the actor part of me because I really feel blessed of living my dream of being an actor. So on set, I don’t think about anything. Whether this film will work or whether the previous one didn’t work. I just sink my teeth into the role and I thoroughly enjoy it.”
She also added, “When my choices are right it is heartening. It boosts your confidence. I believed in something and that gets appreciated. You went ahead and did your best and now the world feels the same. That feeling is unparalleled. When a film does well commercially, it is a huge high!”
Meanwhile, Fast & Furious is continuing its dream run. The film, in total, has earned INR 14.50 crore at the box office.
