The glamorous fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute is held annually on the first Monday of May. Guests are always encouraged to dress according to the theme.
Last year, the theme was Japanese designer Rei Kawakubo, founder of fashion label Comme des Garçons (Art of the In-Between). Met Gala 2017 also saw Quantico and Baywatch actress Priyanka Chopra and xXx: Return of Xander Cage star Deepika Padukone make their debut at this fashion galore.
A few months ago we heard a report that MET Gala 2018’s theme might just be the most controversial one to date. According to a report by WWD, the 2018 theme will be focused on “fashion and religion.” It has been said that the topic was chosen by many major designers such as John Galliano and Riccardo Tisci have been referencing religion in their collections.
It has been finally announced that sartorial queen Rihanna is hosting the event alongside human rights lawyer Amal Clooney. Both Amal and Rihanna will be working with Donatella Versace to welcome the guests. Last year’s Met Gala was co-chaired by Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams.
After trying out the theme’s like an ode to a single designer, Punk and metallic in the past, 2018’s theme will be a rather abstract one, being, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.
Next May, the Costume Institute and all its celebrity devotees will be seen putting their most pious foot forward. Vogue reports that the curator of the fashion exhibit Andrew Bolton aims to display how ‘material Christianity’ has helped for the ‘Catholic imagination’.
